Julius Erving was born on February 22, 1950.He loved playing basketball as a kid. He played basketball in high school and got a scholarship to the University of Massachusetts. He was unknown until he joined Virginia Squires of the ABA(American Basketball Association) in 1971. He was voted MVP in its last three years. In two years he was traded to the New York Nets. He led the Nets to the championship in 1974 and 1976.

Then he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. He led the 76ers to the finals four times in seven years. He was the one who kept the team up when they were down. Then he led them to the championship in 1983. He was one of the most happiest person on his team when they won the championship.

He was voted the NBA 's Most Value Player in 1981 and many other years. In his time that was one of the greatest awards you can receive. He also entered dunk contests and won in the years in 1984 and 1985.He was very tall he was 6 feet 6 inches so he could dunk easily. He beat other slam dunkers also. Even though in one year he lost he still put on a show for people to remember.

The two teams that he was on never complained. They were with him all the way. He helped the team win the championship and helped them win the regular season games. He loved playing basketball. When he first made the team he was so happy. He was loved by everyone and he was # 1 on his teams.

In 1987 he retired. He was a player who made 30,000 points in his whole career. He was know for his height, fast breaks, and highflying slam dunks. Plus he was getting to old to play. When he retired everyone was sad and disappointed but it was his decision and he needed to retire. He wanted to keep playing but he still had to retire.

Julius Erving was one of the most famous legends known today. Now he host dunk contest. He was one of the most famous known black basketball player and gave black kids an idol and he actually helped them to play basketball. He was an idol to everyone around him even the adults. He showed that most African Americans can play basketball. Even people from other teams were jealous of him.
